What are Your Kidneys and What Do They Do?

Your kidneys are located on each side of your back. Your kidneys clean your blood and remove extra fluid from your body. Kidney failure is when your kidneys stop working. When your kidneys fail, you need dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Nutrition in Chronic Kidney Disease

When someone has chronic kidney disease, it means their kidneys aren’t working as well as they should. This makes it important for them to be careful about what they eat and drink.

  1. Salt (Sodium): Too much salt can make their body hold onto water and can raise blood pressure, which can be tough on weak kidneys. So, they should eat less salty snacks and foods.

  2. Potassium: Potassium is found in bananas, oranges, and potatoes. It’s good for the heart and muscles, but when kidneys aren’t strong, too much potassium can be a problem. So, doctors might tell them to eat less of these foods.

  3. Phosphorus: This is in foods like dairy and whole grains. It helps build strong bones, but too much phosphorus can be harmful when someone’s kidneys are sick. They might need to eat less of these foods too.

  4. Fluids: Usually, drinking lots of water is good, but if someone’s kidneys are not very strong, too much water can be hard for them to handle. They might need to drink less than usual.

What is Kidney Failure?

Kidney failure is when your kidneys, which are like filters in your body, stop working properly. This can happen because of sickness or damage to the kidneys. When kidneys fail, they can’t clean your blood like they should or remove waste from your body, so you might feel very sick. People with kidney failure often need special treatments like dialysis or even a kidney transplant to help them stay healthy.

Kidney Transplant

A kidney transplant is taking a kidney from someone and putting it into your body. It can be from someone who is alive or has died. This kidney will do the work that your kidneys can’t.

The benefits of kidney transplant include: Better quality of life, longer life span compared to patients receiving dialysis, avoid or shorten time on dialysis.

In-Center & Home Hemodialysis

Hemodialysis is a way to help your body clean your blood when your kidneys are not working well. In center hemodialysis, you go to a special place called a dialysis center. There, a machine called a dialysis machine helps clean your blood. It’s like a big, smart filter that takes out waste and extra fluids from your blood.

Home hemodialysis is when you do hemodialysis at home instead of going to a center. You still use a dialysis machine, but it’s smaller and made to use at home. With help from an adult, you can learn how to use the machine to clean your blood regularly, which can help you feel better and stay healthy.

Peritoneal Dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis is another way to help clean your blood when your kidneys are not working well. Instead of using a machine outside your body like in hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis uses your belly (abdomen) as a natural filter.

Special fluid is put into your belly through a small tube called a catheter. This fluid stays in your belly for a while, soaking up waste and extra fluid from your blood. Then, the dirty fluid is drained out through the same tube. This process helps keep your blood clean and your body healthy.
